NBA Live: Is the Series Finally Coming Back to Life?

It is kind of wild looking back at the NBA Live series.

You remember the hype.

You remember buying the game the second it dropped.

But then, silence.

Complete radio silence for years.

EA stopped making console basketball games years ago.

Or did they? If you search for ‘NBA Live’ in 2024, you get a bunch of different results.

There is the old console games, and then there is the new NBA Live Mobile game.

It is confusing, right?

I spent the last few weeks trying to figure out exactly what is going on with the franchise.

I downloaded the mobile version.

I tried to remember what made the older games so special.

And honestly, the situation is a little messy, but there is still a reason to play.

The Glitchy History of the Franchise

Let’s be real for a second. Oddly enough,

NBA Live used to be the king of basketball games.

Back in the day, playing NBA Live 2005 or NBA Live 06 was the only way to go.

The mechanics were different from 2K.

The presentation felt like a Saturday morning cartoon.

But things started going downhill around 2013 or 2014.

The competition from NBA 2K just got too stiff.

The biggest killer was the licensing.

2K managed to secure the rights to use real player names. Oddly enough,

NBA Live? They lost the rights.

So, you were playing with generic names like ‘Small Forward’ instead of ‘Kevin Durant.’ It killed the immersion.

Most people just stopped caring.

That is why the series is dead on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

There is no NBA Live 21 on the store shelves.

The 2K Monopoly

EA Sports has shifted its focus almost entirely to FC (formerly FIFA) now.

Basketball is just…

gone from the main menu.

It feels like they abandoned the sinking ship.

But they didn’t just vanish.

They moved everything to mobile.

That is where the current ‘NBA Live’ title exists.

The Mobile Shift

The new NBA Live game isn’t a console port.

It is a mobile-first game.

The graphics are okay, not great, but they work for a phone screen.

The controls are touch-based.

You don’t use a joystick or a complex shot stick anymore.

You tap the screen to shoot, pass, and drive.

From what I’ve seen, the mobile version actually has some good features. Oddly enough,

It has the ‘Pro Stick’ mechanic adapted for touch.

It is smoother than you might think. And this is where things get interesting.

But there is a catch.

It is a F2P (Free to Play) game.

You will see ads.

You will see loot boxes.

And that is where the monetization gets a little aggressive.

Now think about that for a second.

What Makes NBA Live 2024 Different?

Is it worth your time? If you are looking for a next-gen, photorealistic simulation, the answer is no.

Go buy NBA 2K24.

But if you want something casual.

If you want to build a dream team without spending $100 on VC (Virtual Currency), maybe give this a look.

  • Offline Play: You can play the story mode or quick games without an internet connection, which is nice for commutes.
  • Roster Updates: Even though there are no new console games, people still make roster updates for the mobile version.

You can download a roster file that has the 2024 season players, which is wild.

  • Simplicity: It is easier to learn than 2K.

The shooting mechanic is less ‘bullet hell’ and more direct.

How to Fix the Common Bugs

Nothing ruins a game faster than a crash.

A lot of players complain about NBA Live 20 or the newer mobile versions getting stuck on the loading screen.

If you are facing this, don’t panic.

It is usually a save file issue.

Here is a quick tip I picked up from a forum: Clear your game cache. Here’s the interesting part.

On Android, you have to go into Settings > Apps > NBA Live > Storage > Clear Cache. Oddly enough,

On iOS, you might have to delete and reinstall the game, but try clearing the cache first to keep your data. But there’s a catch.

This fixed the game freezing every time I tried to start a match.

Also, make sure your phone isn’t overheating.

The game runs heavy graphics on phones with old processors.

If it feels like it is lagging, just lower the resolution in the settings.

Is It Better Than 2K?

This is the controversial part.

Most people will say no.

2K has the graphics, the story mode (MyCareer), and the MyTeam mode which is basically gambling.

But NBA Live is more honest.

It doesn’t pretend to be a simulation.

It’s arcade-style.

The physics are a bit floaty.

The passing can be weird sometimes. Now think about that for a second.

But for a quick game during lunch or before bed? It hits the spot.

It feels more like playing a video game and less like a job.

Another thing to consider is the community.

The NBA Live community is small. But there’s a catch.

This is actually a good thing.

You can find great roster updates and mods without wading through a sea of toxic comments.

The developers are actually active on social media, answering questions about game balance and glitches.

That kind of communication is rare these days.

Now think about that for a second.

Best Ways to Build Your Team

If you are going to play, you want a good team.

Building a squad in NBA Live Mobile is all about chemistry.

You want players from the same team or same era to get stat boosts.

I found that focusing on point guards and shooting guards is the best way to win online.

They are the ones who create the offense.

If you can get a good PG with high speed and three-point stats, you can outpace almost anyone.

Don’t waste your resources on centers unless you are playing a specific ‘paint’ build.

The game is won in the open floor.

The Verdict

NBA Live is a survivor.

It shouldn’t be here.

It should have died after 2019.

But it clawed its way back to life on mobile. Oddly enough,

Is it perfect? No.

It has ads.

It has glitches.

It doesn’t have LeBron James or Stephen Curry.

But it is a breath of fresh air.

If you are tired of the grind of 2K, NBA Live offers a different kind of gameplay loop.

It’s faster, it’s simpler, and it’s surprisingly addictive.

So, if you see it on the app store, give it a download.

You might be surprised how much fun you can have with a game that many people thought was dead.
